Nikki – I’m glad you liked the brownies, and hope you’ll love this mac and cheese as much. October 26, 2006įarmer Beth – Your Aunt’s recipe is exactly what I was looking for! Yet, now I’ll stick with this, only because I didn’t even have to pre-boil the pasta, and in a home without a machine dishwasher (as opposed to the man dishwasher, my husband), every dish saved counts. One big scoop, a giant romaine salad and an excess of red wine (actually, that part not recommended) and I was done for the night. Luisa – Nice! I have no idea how I missed that I thought I’d read your whole archives when I found your site a while back. I’ve been meaning to get their cookbook for eons, and have no idea why I haven’t done so yet. I’ll just shut up now, before people start pointing out yet again how nutso I am.ĭahlia – Ooh, do share. Sarah – So easy! I hope you like it, too.īridget – What is it with men and a mac and cheese obsession? I loved this dish, but it wasn’t a religious experience for me. I was also tempted to use a crème brulee torch to really crackle it up, but then remembered that I don’t have one because my mean (hee) husband thinks I might be too clumsy to play with fire. Hilary – I know! I admit to being tempted by the prospect of panko on top, but it doesn’t need it. I use it most often as a side dish dish or as part of a spread when having people over (ribs and other summer fare, or for Thanksgiving) when there are too many other things to make to make a fussier one. This is the hands-off one, not as luxurious as Martha’s, not as quick as the stovetop. The Quick, Essential Stovetop Mac-and-Cheese is exactly as it sounds, a way better than boxed weeknight savior, and it takes, at most, 3 minutes longer to make (the 3 minutes you grate the cheese.) The mic drop of the macaroni-and-cheese category, the one you make when only the very, very best will do, is Martha’s Mac-and-Cheese. Note: There are three macaroni-and-cheese recipes on this site and this is not an accident. “The moral of the story: When in doubt, add more cheese.” Finally, she suggests that you resist the temptation to form a crust with unrelated ingredients such as bread crumbs, corn flakes or tortilla chips, with enough cheese, a crisp naturally forms on top. Three: this is no time for whole wheat pasta or artisanal orecchiette, elbow pasta works best. Two, despite suggestions of glorious, rich cheeses, she found nothing better in end results than cheddar or (!) American cheese. One, a seemingly outrageous 2:1 ration of cheese to pasta is indeed possible, and a good thing. She bestows on us several nuggets of gooey wisdom. “None of the recipes came close to my fantasy of what the dish should be: nothing more than tender elbows of pasta suspended in pure molten cheddar, with a chewy, golden-brown crust of cheese on top,” she says, to which I say amen. She finds herself searching, like me, for an un-fussy, classic recipe and finds even more atrocities from white sauces, Worcestershire, smoked gouda and creamed onions instead. A quick search on the New York Times website brought me to this archived article, from the NYT’s Julia Moskin. ![]() Sadly, finding a good recipe was not this simple, and seriously, when did mac-and-cheese get so gussied up? Bacon? Onions? Mushrooms? Blue cheeses? Heavy creams? Bechamel sauces with low proportions of mild cheeses? Curry? Blech! Look, there’s a place for fancy, and childhood classics aren’t it. There’s no comparison, not even a nominal one, to the box mixes, and if I told that the essence of most recipes is to boil milk, stir in cheese, pour it over par-baked pasta and bake it until it’s crusted, would you then believe me? It’s not really my favorite thing, but would that score me points with my eternal-inner-child husband or what? As I searched fruitlessly for a good basic recipe that was neither a pot de crème nor a puddle of ganache, I remembered that I also had a chunk of Cabot extra sharp cheddar to use up and now do you see how these things come to pass? Mac and cheese is one of these sinful beauts that I encourage everyone to make, at least once, from scratch. It’s sat unopened in the fridge since, leaving me the quandary of finding a recipe that used a large quantity of it, as my inner Yiddishe Mama would not allow me to let it go bad, and god knows I am not earnest enough to actually make my morning lattes at home. ![]() The quart of whole milk had been purchased last Saturday with the intention of using it in aforementioned spinach quiche, which, oops, didn’t require any. And yes, I know you are snickering, because how on earth can one innocently go about a process than concludes with spooning into a deep casserole dish crusted with cheese and pasta in a two to one ratio? Well, you’re me, that’s how and you needed to use up some milk. You know, this really started out far more innocently than it now may seem.

They start and finish you in a large gift shop of tchotchkes. Parking is included in your ticket price. Sadly, that may be the future highest and best use for this antiquated, irrelevant relic. The property is now surrounded by high rise apartments and mid rise commercial buildings. The building is hot and stuffy in places, and you walk a lot of steps and stand in small rooms with a group of 18 other people/strangers. ![]() The newly restored rooms are interesting shows of Victorian area rooms and antiques, but you can see they can't keep up with the maintenance of the exterior/facade. There is little historical relevance, nor any innovations that would draw you to the property. The tickets are expensive (approx $42 per adult), and while the house is interesting and sprawling (you get to see maybe 100 of the 160 rooms, on a one hour guided tour), none of the furnishings are intact, though a number of finishes are. I think basically it was a waste of money. With some spare time on our hands, and reading the favorable reviews, we thought this would be a good filler. Our friends visiting from Texas absolutely loved the tour but were also disappointed that there was very little mention of the rifle and it’s connection to the house. We did not experience any event personally. Isaac played up the mystery & shared some reported paranormal events that made it more exciting. That poor tour guide did not believe any of the legends & ruined the “mystery” of the house. We had a good tour guide this time (Isaac). ![]() Those spirits allegedly haunted her causing the constant construction of the house over the 38 years. History should not be re written! Her guilt over all who were killed by that rifle was responsible for her moving to California. They used to have a display of old rifles and also let you hold a rifle as a prop when they took your group’s photo. I understand being sensitive in light of mass shootings but that is a huge part of the history of this house. This tour would have been 5 stars if they had not disassociated themselves from the Winchester rifle. Overall, really happy with the experience you really should go if you have the opportunity. That said, our tour guide was Jennifer, and we also very much enjoyed how informative and nice she was. ![]() You do get access to rooms you don't see on the house tour, but overall it wasn't QUITE our scene. Our second tour was the Spirits tour, and I'd thought it would mostly be about Victorian spirituality, and it was partially about that, but there was also a lot of ghost stories. That said, our house tour was with Freddie, and she was amazing - really lovely and informative we very much enjoyed her and the tour. So I'd say maybe don't depend on that number or email. I ended up buying a second set of tickets (totaling $200 for three people for two tours), and after four days of not hearing back, asked for the refund at the ticket counter, which they gave me without any problems. Well, I emailed and called 5 times each (plus reached out on Facebook and Twitter) and didn't get a response. I saw on the site and in the confirmation email that you could get a refund or rescheduled date by calling their number or emailing. One hiccup: We made a reservation for a Tuesday, but when an atmospheric river came through our area, it was too treacherous to drive (San Jose is more than an hour from our house). ![]() We took my mom on her 82th birthday, and overall we had a great time. 1/20/2024 0 Comments A brief intermission tabs![]() ![]() If the host anticipates long intermissions, he or she may bring in a single performer or group to keep the audience entertained during the break. The use of “filler” performances is one aspect of live-show intermissions that differs significantly from broadcast intermissions. Intermissions are usually scheduled in the middle of the show, or about a third to two thirds of the way through if the show is particularly long, or between acts. This is due to the fact that most people purchase tickets for a performance in advance, knowing exactly what they will see. In a live performance, performers are less concerned with creating tension and interest in order to keep the audience engaged. Script writers are aware of this and carefully craft their work so that “cliffhanger” moments occur immediately prior to a commercial. Intermissions are usually scheduled every fifteen to twenty minutes in broadcasting. Intermission begins and ends with lighting cues, with lights up indicating the start and lights down indicating the end. Using walkie-talkies, coordinators double-check that all of the materials are in place and that all of the performers who need to be on stage right away are available. The show’s musicians and performers usually touch up their makeup, mentally prepare for the next act or song, and make any necessary adjustments to their instruments. Intermissions can be used hosts behind the scenes in a live performance to change set pieces or lighting and audio controls. This takes a long time because the host must accommodate hundreds of people instead of just a few people sitting around a television. Instead, the emphasis is on allowing viewers to use the restroom, read their programs, socialize, possibly get a drink from a water fountain, and stretch. If the host wants to promote something, he or she may do so briefly, but most advertisements are found in the show’s printed programs. If broadcast intermissions last longer, it’s usually because a program ran longer than expected and the station needs something to keep the airwaves occupied until the next scheduled program begins.Īdvertising is not a main focus of an intermission in a live performance, though goods related to the show may be available for purchase on site. Many people skip these commercials in favor of grabbing a snack or using the restroom quickly. Because companies only have a few seconds to catch a consumer’s attention, most broadcast intermissions feature a short series of commercials, each lasting 30 to 60 seconds. For live performances, the length of an intermission is frequently determined the size of the audience, with larger audiences receiving longer intermissions.īecause broadcast intermissions are geared toward marketing and advertising, the duration of intermissions varies between live and recorded and broadcasted performances. ![]() Long intermissions can last up to twenty minutes, while brief intermissions are usually around five minutes. The duration of an intermission during a live show, on the other hand, is longer. Intermissions in television programs are typically one to three minutes long in broadcasting. Intermissions serve a practical purpose for both the performers and the broadcasting stations. An intermission is a brief break in a program or performance that allows viewers to refresh before continuing with the show. |
